🇧🇪 The number one enemy of any ambitious solar installation in Belgium

If you’re installing solar panels in Belgium, you’ll be familiar with the major hurdle: the 10 kVA limit imposed by Synergrid. Cross that red line with the apparent power of your inverters, and you’re out of the realm of standard residential installations. Say hello to a paid grid assessment, a mandatory external decoupling relay and the resulting administrative complications.

On paper, the super-powerful Deye 10K LP3 hybrid inverter (three-phase) looks like a dream with its 11,000 VA. The problem? Its technical specifications make it unsuitable for a standard home. The verdict is final: it is automatically rejected for a standard residential installation.

Our only legal option at Deye for a large three-phase residential installation is therefore its little brother: the Deye SUN-8K-SG04LP3, officially approved at 8,800 VA. Is this a punishment? Far from it! Provided you know its electronics inside out and exploit the way in which distribution system operators (DSOs) approve installations, you can ‘cram’ this 8K to crush your capacity tariff and survive our grey winters.

1. The funnel illusion: Will the inverter restrict my home’s power?

The first concern with an inverter of ‘only’ 8 kW is running out of power on a daily basis to run a heat pump, an oven or a charging point. This is not the case.

The internal architecture of Deye hybrid inverters does not function as a one-way bottleneck. The 8K shares exactly the same chassis as the larger models (10K and 12K) and features a massive AC bus with hardware transfer relays capable of handling 45 amps per phase.

👉 The result in everyday use: As long as the mains grid is available, the Deye 8K allows over 31,000 Watts (31 kW) to flow from the mains to your fuse box! The 8.8 kVA limit only applies to what the inverter generates itself (from the sun or batteries), not what it allows to pass through.

⚠️ The only AC limit you need to be aware of: Blackout (Off-Grid Mode)

If the mains supply fails, the inverter isolates itself and generates its own power using the batteries. It is limited to 50% of its power on a single phase. You will therefore have a maximum of 4,000 W available per phase. Make sure you balance your fuse box correctly to avoid tripping the inverter by switching on a large single-phase appliance during a power cut!

2. The 13-amp hardware limit: Goodbye to ‘Polystringing’

This is where DC engineering (the panels) gets technical. Unlike the 10K model, which has a large asymmetric 26A input, the 8K’s DC mainboard is strictly symmetric and limited to 13 Amps per MPPT tracker (with a short-circuit destruction limit set at 17A).

Let’s take a standard modern panel (e.g. 450W, optimal current Imp = 13.54 A / short-circuit current Isc = 14.25 A).

Painless clipping

Your panels want to deliver 13.54 A, but the inverter caps it at 13 A. You’ll lose around 3–4% of your peak power in the height of summer. In Belgium, we’re happy to accept this minor summer sacrifice in order to have large panels that will capture every last ray of sunlight in winter.

☠️ The fatal error (Parallel connection)

Some installers like to connect an east-facing and a west-facing roof in parallel to the same MPPT input. On the Deye 8K, this is strictly prohibited. In parallel, the amperages add up (14.25 A + 14.25 A = 28.5 A). Faced with the physical limit of 17A, the motherboard will literally go up in smoke at the first ray of sunshine.

3. Winter’s Russian roulette: The ‘Sweet Spot’ of 17 panels

Since we are forced to create long single chains (in series) to build up power, we face another physical barrier: Voltage (Volts). The absolute destruction limit for a Deye LP3 is 800 Volts DC. Beyond that, an electric arc will pierce the electronics.

The beginner’s mistake: 18 panels

• In summer at 25°C: 18 x 450W panels (Voc voltage ~40V) generate 720V. Everything is fine.
• But silicon reacts violently to the cold! On a freezing morning at -15°C, the panel voltage will jump by more than 11% (to ~44.45 V).
• The fatal calculation: 18 panels × 44.45 V = 800.1 Volts.
• At the first winter sunrise, the inverter hits the ceiling and the warranty is voided (Overvoltage Error).

🎯 Precise sizing: The rule of 17

To safely ‘feed’ our 8K system, we cap it at a maximum of 17 panels per string.

The freezing crash test (-15°C): 17 panels × 44.45 V = 755 Volts. You retain a 45-volt safety margin. The inverter is untouchable!

4. Extreme loading at 15.3 kWp: What is REALLY happening inside the system?

Here we are with our ultimate winter design: 34 panels spread across our two strings (2 MPPT × 17 panels). Total power on the roof: 15,300 Wp (15.3 kWp).

This is an oversize of more than 170% for an 8 kW inverter. So, what happens on a fine June afternoon when your panels are bathed in glorious sunshine and want to send out their 15 kW?

Debunking two persistent myths

Myth No. 1: “The inverter will dissipate the surplus as heat”

Wrong! If the inverter had to burn off 5 kW as heat to get rid of the surplus, it would literally melt onto your wall. In reality, a hybrid inverter usesvoltage shifting. Its electronic intelligence (the MPPT) deliberately shifts its power tracking away from the panel’s optimal point. Consequence: the excess electrons are simply never "drawn in". The excess energy is not produced, and the machine remains within its normal thermal range.

Myth No. 2: “The inverter will draw 15 kW simultaneously”

Also false! Although the internal architecture of the Deye 8K can handle immense power, it has an uncompromising “gatekeeper” at its input: its DC converters. The technical specifications are clear: the 8K’s maximum solar input limit (Max DC Input) is 10,400 W. The unit will never allow 15.3 kW to enter its system from the panels.

The actual power distribution at midday

The inverter electronically limits the input to a maximum of 10.4 kW. Of these 10.4 kW entering the unit:

1. It converts up to 8,800 W to AC (its Synergrid legal limit) for your home and the public grid.
2. It redirects the remainder (i.e. 1,600 W) directly into your batteries via the internal DC bus.
3. The remaining 4.9 kW of potential on the roof is ignored (Voltage Shifting).

👉 But then, why install 15.3 kWp?

Not to create a pointless ‘peak’ at midday, but to create a massive ‘plateau’ of production! With 15.3 kWp, you saturate the inverter’s input from 10 am until 4 pm. And above all, under a grey Belgian November sky where a standard installation struggles to produce 800 W, your “overload” will generate a continuous 2,500 W, thereby eliminating the capacity tariff and saving on your heat pump bill!

5. Synergrid’s ultimate “Cheat Code”: The GEN Port’s God Mode

If the panel input (DC) is physically capped at 10.4 kW, how can we add more power to our property (for example, on a carport or an outbuilding) without exceeding the fateful 10 kVA limit imposed by Synergrid?

This is where the most ingenious loophole exploited by top-tier Belgian installers comes into play: the use of the GEN port on the Deye inverter.

How the GEN port works

You can install panels managed by micro-inverters (Enphase, APSystems, Astro-E, etc.) and connect their AC cable directly to the Deye’s GEN port (configured as a Micro Inv Input).

The administrative magic (The Deye Firewall)

The basic rule in Belgium stipulates that the total capacity of all your inverters must not exceed 10 kVA. If you were to connect these micro-inverters in the traditional way to your main distribution board, the DSO would add up: 8.8 kVA (Deye) + for example 4 kVA (micro-inverters) = 12.8 kVA. Boom, you’re classified as a commercial installation.

But the Deye’s architecture changes the game!

By connecting the micro-inverters to the GEN port, they are physically downstream, ‘hidden behind’ the hybrid inverter. For your distribution network operator (Ores, Resa, Fluvius...), the Deye is the only unit connected to the public grid. Since the Deye has a certification proving that it will never allow more than 8,800 VA to flow out onto the grid, the DNOs agree to count ONLY the Deye’s power!

👉 Your micro-inverters become administratively “invisible” and you remain below the 10 kVA residential threshold.

How far can we go physically?

The only limit is physical: it is the machine’s survival rule (the famous 1:1 AC Coupling ratio).

If a power cut hits your neighbourhood (blackout), the Deye disconnects from the grid. Your micro-inverters, however, continue to generate power. If your home isn’t using any power, the Deye’s internal converter has to reverse its operation to absorb all this excess AC energy and force it into your batteries.

Since the Deye’s converter is rated at 8,000 W, you can connect a maximum of 8,000 W of micro-inverters to this port!

Summary: The power station disguised as a house

Let’s work out the figures for what we’ve just built on a ‘small’ residential connection using a Deye SUN-8K-SG04LP3:

• Synergrid compliance: 8,800 VA declared (100% approved for a private individual)
• Main roof (DC via MPPT): 15.3 kWp of panels (capped at 10.4 kW usable in the system)
• Annex roof (AC via GEN port): 8 kW of micro-inverters (operating at 100%)
• Total panel power on the property: 23.3 kWp!

The symphony of flows (The midday crash test)

One summer’s noon, the sheer amount of energy coursing through the system’s veins is dizzying:

1. The micro-inverters are pushing 8,000 W (AC) onto the Deye’s internal bus.
2. The MPPTs draw 10,400 W (DC) from the main roof.
3. The Deye therefore manages 18,400 W simultaneously!
4. It opens its relay to the grid and the house to allow the legal maximum to pass through: 8,800 W.
5. What does it do with the remaining 9,600 W? Its colossal battery charger (rated to handle 190 amps, or around 9,500 W in real terms) feeds it straight into your battery bank at lightning speed!

FAQ: Deye inverters and oversizing in Belgium

Can I really install 23 kWp with a single 8.8 kVA inverter?

Yes, by combining 15.3 kWp DC on the MPPTs (34 panels) and 8 kW AC on the GEN port (micro-inverters). The Deye 8K inverter is the only one visible to the DSO, so you remain below the Synergrid limit of 10 kVA.

Why not go straight for the Deye 10K, which is more powerful?

The Deye 10K has a rating of 11,000 VA, which exceeds the residential limit of 10 kVA. You would then need to switch to a commercial installation, which involves a paid network assessment, an external decoupling relay and administrative complications. The 8K, at 8,800 VA, remains within the limits.

What happens to the 4.9 kW ‘lost’ on the roof at midday?

They are not "lost": the inverter uses voltage shifting. The excess energy is simply not produced, without generating excessive heat. This is the price to pay for having a massive output plateau for the rest of the day.

Can I really install 17 x 450W panels per string?

Yes, provided you check the open-circuit voltage (Voc) of your panels. With a Voc of ~40V, 17 panels reach 755V at -15°C, which is below the 800V limit. With 18 panels, you risk damaging the inverter at the first winter frost.

Is the GEN port really ‘invisible’ to Synergrid?

Administratively, yes: the micro-inverters connected to the GEN port are downstream of the hybrid inverter. For the DSO, only the Deye 8K is connected to the public grid. Its certificate guarantees that it will never exceed 8,800 VA of feed-in, so you remain a residential customer.

Which battery should be paired with a Deye 8K fed at 23 kWp?

With a charger capable of handling 190A (≈9.5 kW), aim for at least 10 kWh to make the installation cost-effective. Pylontech US5000 batteries (4.8 kWh modular) are an excellent choice: stack 3–4 modules for 14.4–19.2 kWh.
