Cable XVB 5G6 mm² - Three-phase Rigid Cable for Fixed Electrical Installations

The XVB 5G6 mm² cable is a PVC-insulated multicore rigid electrical cable specially designed to meet the requirements of low-voltage fixed electrical installations. Its robust construction with 5 solid copper conductors (3 phases + neutral + earth) makes it the reference cable for three-phase photovoltaic installations and residential and tertiary electrical distribution systems.

Compliant with the Belgian General Regulations on Electrical Installations (RGIE) and European standards HD 604 and EN 50575, this cable guarantees safety, reliability and longevity for your most demanding electrical projects.

Main applications

The XVB 5G6 mm² cable is versatile and can be adapted to a wide range of installation configurations:

  • Three-phase photovoltaic installations: Fixed connection of 10 to 15 kW inverters between the inverter and the main switchboard (AC side)
  • Residential electrical distribution: Connection between main switchboard and sub-switchboards to supply specific areas of the home
  • Commercial and industrial installations: Wiring of three-phase circuits to supply professional equipment (heat pumps, compressors, machine tools)
  • Indoor installation: surface-mounted on a wall, flush-mounted in a recess, in cable trays or technical ducts
  • Protected outdoor installation: Installation in protective sheaths (ICTA, IRL) for outdoor feed-throughs
  • Buried installation: Installation in sheaths, conduits or ducts buried in accordance with the RGIE (minimum depth 60 cm)

Advantages of XVB cable for photovoltaic installations

Rigid construction for fixed installations: Unlike flexible cables (H07RN-F), the XVB 5G6 mm² cable has rigid class 1 solid copper conductors. This makes it ideal for permanent fixed installations where the cable will not be moved after installation. Its rigidity makes it easy to pass through sheaths and ensures optimum hold in cable trays.

Versatile installation in accordance with the RGIE: XVB cable is approved for all types of installation in accordance with the Belgian General Regulations on Electrical Installations (RGIE): surface-mounted, flush-mounted, in a surface-mounted sheath or buried in a conduit. This versatility makes it the universal cable for fixed electrical installations in Belgium.

Optimised fire classification: With its Cca-s3,d2,a3 classification in accordance with EN 50575, XVB cable meets reaction to fire requirements for bundled or flat installations. It does not propagate flames (IEC 60332-1-2 compliant) and produces a small amount of opaque smoke in the event of a fire, limiting the risk to people.

Mechanical and chemical resistance: The double PVC insulation (conductors + sheath) offers excellent protection against mechanical shocks, crushing, humidity and common chemical agents. The cable retains its electrical properties even under demanding installation conditions.

💡 Expert tip: For three-phase photovoltaic installations, XVB 5G6 mm² cable is perfectly sized to connect 10 to 15 kW inverters over distances of up to 20-25 metres. For longer distances, use a larger cross-section (10 mm²) to limit the voltage drop to less than 3%.

Sizing and choice of cross-section

The choice of XVB cable cross-section depends on three main parameters: the power of the installation, the length of the cable and the installation method. For a 5G6 mm² XVB cable:

  • Maximum recommended power: 10 to 15 kW three-phase (depending on length)
  • Length up to 15 m: Three-phase inverters up to 15 kW
  • Length 15-25 m: Three-phase inverters up to 12 kW
  • Over 25 m: Choose a larger cross-section (10 mm² minimum)

Table of admissible currents according to installation method :

Mode de pose Description Courant admissible
Type B Pose encastrée en paroi isolante 36A
Type C Pose en apparent sur paroi, sur chemin de câbles 41A
Type E Pose enterrée dans conduit ou fourreau 46A

Installation and use

The XVB 5G6 mm² cable must be carefully laid in accordance with good practice and the requirements of the RGIE :

Preparation and planning :

  1. Calculating lengths: Measure the route precisely, allowing a 10-15% margin for connections and reserves in junction boxes.
  2. Choice of installation method: Determine whether the installation will be exposed, flush-mounted or buried, depending on architectural constraints.
  3. Selecting accessories: Prepare ICTA/IRL sheaths, fixing collars, junction boxes, dominos or Wago terminals.

Installation techniques :

  • Exposed installation: Fix the cable every 30-40 cm with suitable clamps. Avoid excessively tight bends (minimum radius 90 mm).
  • Recessed installation: Make sufficiently deep recesses, pull the cable without excessive stress, fill in with plaster or mortar.
  • Duct installation: Use minimum Ø25mm ICTA ducts. Pull the cable with a wire puller, taking care not to exert excessive force.
  • Buried installation: Place the cable in a sheath or conduit at least 60 cm underground. Mark the passage with red warning netting 20 cm below the surface.

Connections and splicing :

  1. Stripping: Use a cable stripper to remove the outer sheath, then strip 10-12 mm off each conductor.
  2. Identification: Be sure to follow the colour code (Black/Brown/Grey=phases, Blue=neutral, Green-Yellow=earth)
  3. Tightening: Use Wago dominos or terminals suitable for the 6 mm² cross-section. Tighten firmly but not excessively so as not to crush the copper.
  4. Checking: Check the continuity of each conductor and that there are no short-circuits before switching on the power.

  • Deye SUN-10K-SG04LP3-EU (10 kW three-phase)
  • Huawei SUN2000-10KTL-M1 (10 kW three-phase)
  • Fronius Symo 10.0-3-M (10 kW three-phase)
  • Goodwe GW10K-ET (10 kW three-phase hybrid)

12 kW three-phase inverters :

  • Deye SUN-12K-SG04LP3-EU (12 kW three-phase)
  • Huawei SUN2000-12KTL-M5 (12 kW three-phase)
  • Fronius Symo 12.5-3-M (12.5 kW three-phase)

  • Fronius Symo 15.0-3-M (15 kW three-phase)

⚠️ Important: For 15 kW inverters, limit the length of the XVB 5G6 cable to a maximum of 15 metres. Beyond that, use a 10 mm² cross-section to comply with the 3% voltage drop limit.

Differences between XVB and H07RN-F cables

Two types of cable are commonly used for photovoltaic installations: XVB (rigid) and H07RN-F (flexible). Here are the main differences:

Caractéristique XVB 5G6 (ce produit) H07RN-F 5G6
Type de conducteur Rigide (cuivre massif classe 1) Souple (câblé classe 5)
Matériau gaine PVC Néoprène (caoutchouc)
Usage principal Installations fixes permanentes Raccordements souples, mobiles
Pose enterrée ✓ Autorisée sous conduit (RGIE) ✗ Non recommandée
Souplesse Faible (rigide) Excellente
Tenue mécanique Excellente (résiste à l'écrasement) Bonne
Prix indicatif Économique Plus élevé
Recommandation Câblage fixe définitif Raccordements finaux, câblages temporaires

Our advice: For a complete photovoltaic installation, combine the two types of cable as required: XVB for long fixed links (roof→inverter, inverter→array), H07RN-F for flexible final connections to the inverter.
